Using Objet’s industry leading 3D printing and laser technologies, a German company has produced an eight-legged spider-like robot.
This itsy-bitsy spider specializes in natural catastrophes and industrial accidents - it can crawl over hurdles and jump over gaps to get where humans can’t reach. The Chilean miner rescue efforts in October 2010 could have been sped up and improved if rescue efforts included the use of this 3D Printed technology. Each of the “spiders” legs can be customized and adjusted with ease with a simple edit on our 3D prototyping software. This customization allows each leg to vary not only in length but leg strength and load bearing capabilities as well.
The most significant part of this eight legged crawler isn’t the fact that it is armed with a camera, hydraulic joints and measuring devices – it is the price. "Our robot is so cheap to produce that it can be discarded after being used just once," said German study group Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft researcher Ralf Becker, "like a disposable rubber glove."
