At the 2011 EuroMold World Fair, in Frankfurt, Germany, inventors and innovators are sharing their ideas and designs amongst each other. The fair, which runs from November 29th to December 2nd, 2011, not only congregates the 3D printing community, but also distributes awards and recognition.
One of the displays that garnered the most attention was an entire car dashboard printed using Objet’s new ABS-like digital material.
The model was originally designed using CAD software to fit the exact dimensions of a car.
“This dashboard was cut into 19 pieces and then was glued together,” said Jonathan Jaglom, VP of Sales Operations for Objet. The full-size, functional 3D printed car dashboard was painted and has a seamless finish. Also, the textures of different surfaces, like the dashboard, radio control are, fan vents and LCD display case all vary. Fitted parts and something complete the unique design that marvelled visitors.
This is all thanks to the new ABS-like digital material.
“(Each part) is a function of accuracy and tolerance. The advantage of Objet is that its tolerance is great.” said Jaglom as he displayed the vents spinning ability. Jaglom compared the gluing of the finished product to Lego building – piece-by-piece.
Jaglom also displayed a working engine air box. The materials used to print 3D prototypes in Objet’s printers are so durable that it is possible for combustion to take place within it. “The new ABS material can handle tremendous heat.”
